Patient education

Understand your condition and your options

Clear, practical information helps you take an active role in your care.

01

What is lymphedema?

Understand common signs, risk factors, and when a specialized evaluation may help.

Read the overview

Lymphedema is swelling caused by a buildup of lymphatic fluid. Common signs include persistent swelling, heaviness, tightness, skin changes, or clothing and jewelry feeling tighter on one side. Early assessment can help you understand the cause and learn safe management strategies.

02

Preparing for your first visit

Know what to bring, what to wear, and what to expect during your evaluation.

Read the overview

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the affected area to be examined. Bring your medication list, relevant medical or surgical information, compression garments you currently use, and your questions. Your visit may include measurements, movement testing, education, and an individualized care plan.

03

Cancer rehabilitation explained

Learn how physical therapy can support function before, during, and after treatment.

Read the overview

Cancer rehabilitation may address weakness, fatigue, pain, balance, limited motion, scar restriction, swelling, and difficulty returning to daily activities. Treatment is tailored to your diagnosis, current treatment, precautions, and personal goals.

04

Lipedema care

Learn how specialized therapy may help manage discomfort, swelling, mobility, and daily function.

Read the overview

Lipedema is a chronic condition that can cause a disproportionate buildup of painful fatty tissue, most often in the legs and sometimes the arms. Individualized care may include education, gentle movement and exercise, compression guidance, symptom-management strategies, and coordination with your healthcare team.

05

Benefits of manual lymphatic drainage

Learn how this gentle, specialized technique may support fluid movement and ease lymphedema-related symptoms.

Read the overview

Manual lymphatic drainage, or MLD, uses light, rhythmic skin-stretching movements rather than deep-tissue massage. It may help some patients manage swelling, tightness, heaviness, or discomfort, especially when included in a broader plan with compression, exercise, skin care, and self-management. Because MLD is not appropriate for everyone, your therapist will review your health history and precautions first.

06

What is complete decongestive therapy?

Understand the coordinated treatments used to reduce swelling and support long-term lymphedema management.

Read the overview

Complete decongestive therapy, or CDT, is a comprehensive, noninvasive approach that combines manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging or garments, therapeutic exercise, skin and nail care, and patient education. Treatment commonly begins with a reduction phase and continues with an individualized maintenance plan to help control symptoms over time.
